Banned Books

I wrote about Banned Books Week last year, and didn't really intend to devote a post to it again this year, but since I just got back from having my teeth cleaned and my entire mouth feels as though it was in its own personal earthquake, and because I absolutely love the BBW poster this year, I thought I'd mention it.

I continue to be shocked that Harry Potter, A Light in the Attic, and Where's Waldo are on the list. I get that the Jesus Freaks hate the HP books (not that I support a ban) but what, exactly, is wrong with a book of kid-friendly poetry? And Where's Waldo? Unless he's in a porn shop or Jeff Dahmer's kitchen, I can't IMAGINE why he's been banned!

My throbbing gums are preventing any further intelligent analysis, so, umm...

Go read a banned book!

As usual I'm amazed by the books on the list although I guess what I should be amazed by is that there's a list at all.

Where's Waldo - I did some research: there's a beach scene where a mean litte boy is about to throw a bucket of water on a woman who has :: gasp :: untied the top of her bikini :: gasp :: Seriously, that's it. The top is untied and it is simply implied that she might at some point sit up. Exposing her breasts. Maybe.

I get the feeling that it might be entertaining to go through the list and investigate the different idiotic reasons that the books have been banned. Or then again it could just be infuriating.

Oh you so have to check out this link! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Banned_books

It tells you the reason (or lack of reason) behing each ban. A Light in the Attic by Shel Silverstein was banned because parents believed one scene might actually encourage children to break dishes instead of washing them!

wow... that's quite the reference. I was *shocked* to learn that The Joy of Sex and the Kama Sutra have "explicit sexual content."

thanks for the link :o)
